Zamioculcas zamiifolia “ZZ”
In all it’s varietals, ZZ is a low-maintenance houseplant even gardeners with black thumbs can keep alive. Native to East Africa, these plants are a herbaceous perennial who grow from bulb like rhizomes underground. Commercially available in green, black (Raven) and variegated (Chameleon). These plants are a stunning addition to any collection.
Care
Other than a pot with adequate drainage and a location away from cold drafts, these plants don’t require much. They can handle dark corners and still grow (albeit slowly) in florescent lights. ZZs like to have their soil dry out completely between watering and can even survive long periods of neglect. Overwatering or poorly draining soil can lead to the rhizomes rotting. Because of their slow growing habits large/mature zz’s, especially Raven or Chameleon can be quite expensive in the houseplant world.
Toxicity
ZZ Plants contain Calcium Oxalate (the same as rhubarb leaves) which are not recommended for consumption. This can cause stomach trouble and in higher quantities produce sores and numbing on ingestion and may even be fatal. It’s tough leaves will deter most plant nibblers, but if your furry friend has a tendency to snack on your plants you may want to put it somewhere they can’t get to it.
